I Keep Getting a "Speed Up Detected" Message During Calibration

If you frequently see this message after a calibration spindown attempt, you likely need more roller pressure against the tire. Spin down target times should be in the 1.5 to 2.0 seconds range.


Adjustment ideas to reach target

If your spindown result is longer than the times listed above, you need to increase roller pressure against the tire, this increases drag, which subsequently decreases a spindown time. This is the most common reason for getting a "Speed Up Detected" message. To correct, increase roller pressure by a 1/2 turn, then run another calibration attempt. Keep repeating this sequence until successful and in the targeted range for your model. You may need to keep adding roller pressure even though tire slip has already been eliminated.  

If the roller tension knob is difficult to turn, but you're still outside of the specified range, here are some items to double check:

  1. First, make sure the resistance unit mounting bolt isn't overly tightened. This is the main pivot bolt that attaches the resistance unit to the frame. If the acorn style nut on the right side is torqued down, it can pinch the resistance unit between the flanges of the frame, which makes it difficult for the unit to freely pivot forward into the tire. Loosen that acorn nut as needed, it only really needs to be finger tight so the bolt doesn't come out of the pivot. 
  2. Second, make sure that the two screws that hold the threaded crossbar in place aren't too tight as well. The crossbar needs to spin as the resistance unit (RU) pivots forward into the tire.  This can cause binding with the roller tensioning knob and can also make calibrations tougher than they need to be.
  3. Third, apply a thin film of grease to the roller tension knob threads where they thread into the crossbar to eliminate as much friction as possible.

We recommend using a trainer tire with any of the tire-drive models for the best possible data accuracy. We always use the Kinetic Trainer Tire when testing and generating power curves. Any tire that is belted for flat protection is generally a poor choice for indoor training. The added shielding and stiffer rubber combine to limit the amount of grip the tire is capable of. 


Recommended set-up and calibration best practices:

  1. 100 psi or maximum-recommended pressure on the sidewall of the tire (use a trainer tire)
  2. Clean the tire and trainer roller with Windex or isopropyl alcohol to ensure it's clean and sticky
  3. Start with 2 to 5 full turns of the roller tension knob, then fine tune to get the right calibration number for your trainer model (see above).
  4. Check main pivot bolt - loosen if needed
  5. Check cross bar - loosen if you can't spin the threaded cross bar
  6. Add roller pressure as needed to get into the specified spin down target time for your model
