Before You Ride: Pair Your Trainer And Update Firmware

The first time you set up your trainer and pair it to the Kinetic Fit app on your iOS or Android device, you'll very likely need to update the firmware. Up-to-date firmware is critical for ensuring that your trainer works. Even if you're using Zwift or another 3rd-party cycling app you'll still need to do periodic firmware updates and calibrations within the Kinetic Fit app so it's good to know how this works now.

1. Download and install the Kinetic Fit app: www.kinetic.fit
2. Open app, be sure to allow location services in app or sensors won’t work. from APP MENU, select PROFILE and create a user account and profile.

3. Plug in trainer and select SENSORS from APP MENU.
4. Pair trainer by selecting CHAIN ICON

5. In a moment or two another screen will come up with a Bluetooth Pairing Request, select PAIR.
6. After trainer pairs, select YES to activate free trial subscription. NOTE: A green banner will appear on the top of the screen if a firmware update is available.

7. Tap green banner to update firmware and select UPDATE FIRMWARE. Keep screen active and don’t navigate away or update will fail.
8. When update is complete, Select OKAY and unplug trainer. Plug trainer in again and start training.

PAIRING ISSUES

Sometimes customers encounter issues with pairing. With NEW R1 trainers it might be because trainer pairing with device bluetooth settings isn't connected. R1 trainer owners should check their device settings to be sure the trainer is paired in the phone or tablet settings: SETTINGS > BLUETOOTH > MY DEVICES, scroll down and find your trainer like you would with a wireless speaker or headphones (IMAGES BELOW). When you find your trainer listed please be sure it's connected when it's paired with the Fit app. If it's says "NOT CONNECTED," select the trainer by tapping on it and it will attempt to establish a connection. When the trainer is listed as "CONNECTED," the app will be able to control resistance again and you should be able to calibrate normally.

FRESH PAIRING

Under some circumstances when quitting the Fit app and unplugging the trainer and restarting the Fit app and plugging in the trainer won't help with establishing a pairing, we recommend that you "Forget This Device" in device bluetooth settings and start with a new pairing process as outlined above in steps 1 through 5.

Start by hard quitting the Kinetic Fit app to disconnect trainer connection from app. Next go to: SETTINGS > BLUETOOTH > MY DEVICES, scroll down and find your trainer and select the "circle i" icon on the right of the name. Tap "Forget This Device" and confirm with red words at the bottom of the screen by again selecting "Forget Device." This will disconnect your device from the trainer too. You need to do both of these in order to start a fresh pairing. (IMAGES BELOW)

This double pairing is not as intuitive as we would like, but it's how Bluetooth devices connect with the Control trainer chip set and Bluetooth FTMS communication standards that the industry has established as a best practice. The longer explanation: the trainer connects to the Fit app and the trainer also connects to the phone/tablet in order to establish full functionality and allow for multiple permission levels. If you're only paired with the Fit app you'll not actually have given your device permission to control the trainer. Once the bluetooth pairing request has been affirmed (step 5 above), your device will have full permission to control the trainer resistance. Trust us, this might not make sense, but it's how the FTMS standard works. 

After going through the unpairing process, unplug the trainer and relaunch the Fit app. Plug in your trainer and go to the Sensors screen and repeat steps 1 through 5 above. This should help with any pairing hang ups or calibration issues that aren't related to tire/roller pressure.
