Some tires definitely work better than others. Tires designed for durability or puncture resistance typically use a harder rubber compound, which doesn’t grip the roller as well. Our trainer tires use a smooth tread with softer rubber that grips the roller well and reduces slippage.
Tips for roller tension, app calibration and power curve accuracy:
Roller tension: with the proper tire and tire inflation you shouldn't need to tighten much beyond 2 full turns after the tire and roller begin to touch. We suggest tightening and then checking for wheel slippage with a quick tug back and forth on the rear tire. After the initial 2 full turns, try adjusting in 1/4 turn increments if needed.
Recommended best practices:
- Use a trainer tire (ours in particular) they are made of a softer rubber compound that will grip better on the roller (https://kurtkinetic.com/blog/posts/choosing-the-best-tire-for-the-trainer/)
- Be sure tire is inflated to manufacturer spec at the beginning of each ride. It's not uncommon for tires to lose a bit of air pressure after just a day.
- Periodically clean the tire and roller with a rag and some isopropyl alcohol or glass cleaner. After it evaporates you'll have a nice sticky interface.
- When using the inRide app, you'll have the most accuracy from day to day if you vary the roller tension as little as possible, stick with the same tire, keep it clean and keep it filled to the same PSI.
- When using the inRide app, don't skip the 10-minute warmup prior to calibration. The few minutes of spinning ensures that the tire is warmed up and that any air in the fluid chamber has adjusted temperature.
